Working Towards a Brighter Future for Memphis:  The Memphis LED Streetlight Upgrade

MLGW and the City of Memphis are currently working to upgrade over 77,000 High Pressure Sodium lights into new high efficiency LED lights utilizing a state-of-the-art Lighting Management System (LMS).  This upgrade will result in a 55% reduction in electricity usage and reduce greenhouse emissions by an estimated 27,000 metric tons annually. As part of the upgrade, a system was needed to track light installations and present the data to both administrators and citizens.

To accomplish this a Geographic Information System was created to store pole location data along with upgrade status, including new fixture types, wattages, and pole condition data.  This data was then fed to various applications for administrators to track project progress and allow citizens to track their installation progress for their neighborhood.

We will discuss and examine the methods used to integrate and collect data from a variety of sources and the methods used to disseminate the data to the project partners in the most efficient manner possible.  Additionally, we will examine the GIS tools used in the project along with the issues that arose in the development of the applications.
